Kamikaze and Mustang

From the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), the Kamikaze and Mustang teams will participate this year at the RECCS.

Our students interested in spaghetti bridge building encountered more difficulties this year, so their number has significantly diminished. After the initial enthusiasm and interest, only 3 teams have registered for the final contest set on April 27th, thus, it became a presentation instead of selection.

These teams were as follows

Kamikaze: Csaba Zajzon, Gábor Szász, Lénárd Ambrus and Róbert Bálint (third-year civil engineering students).

Mustang: Levente Veres, Levente Balázs, Edmond Takács and Tekla Kiss (third-year civil engineering students).

Valhala: Dan Pintea, Bogdan Bozeșan, Raluca Bene and Roxana Balaj (second-year civil engineering students).

Unfortunately the Valhala team has withdrawn quite before the event, so only the Kamikaze and Mustang teams attended the loading test. These two teams had participated with similar arched structures (989 g total weight Kamikaze, 951 g total weight Mustang), but the final bearing capacity could not be measured exactly for them. In both tests the engine of the loading device stopped working at 440 kgf, so we had to wait until the spaghetti bridges exploded, without knowing the ultimate loading values.

The Kamikaze team won the 2nd place last year in bridge category at the RECCS, and their best result was achieved at the TörDElő, in the 9th of November 2015, in Debrecen (Hungary), where they won with 496,8 kgf.
