RTU in World spaghetti bridge competition will be represented by teams "Bridge IT" and "JAM"

Riga Technical University (RTU) engineering student teams «Bridge IT» and «JAM» won spaghetti bridge competition „STiKS”, which took place on 2. April in RTU Design center. Both teams acquired voucher for the world spaghetti bridge competition „RECCS 2016”, which takes place on 26. May in Hungary, Budapest.

Team „Bridge IT” – RTU faculty of civil engineering (FCE) students Lauris Lubgans, Lauris Lodītis and Kristaps Zeps – won the big bridge contruction discipline, in which 7 teams participated. During the bridge load test, their bridge scored 425,246 kilograms. The team also participated in World spaghetti bridge competition last year, where they won and set a new Latvian record – 488,3 kilograms – bridge load testing. This year, the team is hoping to break last years result.

While team „JAM” – Faculty of Mechanical engineering, Transport and Aeronautics students Artūrs Vēvers, Jānis Lungevičs and Māris Puriņš – showed everyone what they are capable in small bridge discipline, on the spot during the allowed building time of 6 hours, with only one spaghetti package or 500 grams, they managed to build the strongest bridge. 16 teams participated in this category. During the load test, the bridge managed to hold 247,779 kilograms. They also took the 3rd place in big bridge discipline, where their bridge held 343.874 kilograms.

In big bridge discipline the second place was taken by RTU FCE student team „Bridge That” – Krišjānis Silickis, Mārtiņš Ķīķeris, Kristaps Kroičs with an result of 403.786 kg. Second place in small bridge discipline went to RTU Faculty of Power and Electrical engineering students team „Ampēriņš” – Aleksandrs Riguns and Maksims Feofilovs – with an result of 111.988 kilograms, while third place – Technical University of Tallin team „Stabilo boss” – Timmu Tollimägi, Tanel Ärm, Liisu Miller, during the load test, their bridge scored 44.019 kilograms.

In the small bridge discipline, high school students also were allowed to participate. 26 teams were taking a part but the team that conquered was „MakaRoņi” – Sigulda State gymansium students Edgars Trops, Mārtiņš Jeseris and Pēteris Bērziņš. Their bridge managed to hold 55,664 kilograms. Second place was taken by Riga young technicians center team „Sky Boys” – Igors Jaščenko, Makars Lavišs, Gļebs Martjanovsno – with an result 51.636 kilograms, while third place – Jelgava proffesional school and Jelgava State gymansium team „Abrakadabra” – Klāvs Gūtmanis, Edgars Batkovsikis, Kristaps Blūmanis. Their bridge held 40.283 kilograms.

The competition was held by Riga Technical University Faculty of Mechanical engineering, transport and aeronautics students council in collaboration with RTU Students Parliament. The event was supported by one of the largest grain processing enterprise in Baltics Inc. „Dobeles dzirnavnieks”, home appliances company Ltd. „Robert Bosch”, Ltd. „Inženieru birojs „Kurbada tilti”„, as well as Ltd. „Projekts 3”, European Comission, Latvian cosmetics brand „STENDERS”, Latvian Occupation Museum, magazine „Ilustrētā zinātne”, Energy drink „Red Bull”, fund „Viegli”, coffee shop „Coffee Inn”, bar „Ezītis miglā”.
